One of the greatest monuments of the ancient world, the Library city of Alexandria continues to preserve the memory of its founder, Alexander the Great. This massive, ornate structure has multiple levels, and patrolling automaton sphinxes.
As Jess and Dario will discover, it’s not a good place to draw suspicion …
The young daughter of Red Ibrahim is clever well beyond her years … and her father’s brilliant apprentice in the dangerous world of smuggling books.
Anti has a personal stake in aiding Jess in his quest to destroy the Library, since she’s lost loved ones to the jaws of automatons, and worse.
Deep in shadows lies the most secure, most dangerous secret of The Great Library: shelves upon shelves of books deemed too dangerous for public access. But who decides what is too dangerous to know … and why? As Jess and his friends will discover, the Black Archives hold the key to a future that the Library never wants to see.
Far beneath a Library stronghold lies a dark chamber that once held Scholar Wolfe … and now holds someone else imprisoned for the same discoveries. It will take everything Jess and his friends have to reach that cell … and cost them everything to open it.
This unassuming criminal is also a Mesmer, skilled in the arts of drawing forth hidden memories. He’s trustworthy to a point … and they will have to trust him farther than that to get to the truth of what Scholar Wolfe remembers.
Another of the great wonders of the ancient world, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, like the Library, has survived. It now serves as offices and research facilities for many of the Library’s foremost scholars, including Scholar Khalila Seif, and Scholar Dario Santiago.
The foremost smuggler of Alexandria, and a very dangerous man … who might be inclined to extend help to Jess Brightwell, for professional courtesy. But only so far as it doesn’t risk his own business.
A bustling, cosmopolitan area full of temples, civic buildings, shops and statues, the Forum has survived the ages … and is a favorite target, together with the Roman Serapeum, of the Burners.
A respected, well-liked scholar who happens to be deaf, Scholar Prakesh has taken Dario Santiago under her wing as an apprentice in her work. But when Dario uses her to find critical information, he puts her at great risk.
A Centurion in Captain Santi’s company, Botha is assigned to the boring job of proctoring Jess’s trainee squad through their final tests … but when disaster strikes, he doesn’t hesitate to run headlong into danger to save lives.
The Blue Squad leader for Santi’s company, he is Jess and Glain’s new boss … a clever, quick young man with a deadly sense of humor, and deep loyalty to the Library.
It’s that last that might cost all their lives.
Captain Santi’s lieutenant is a cool, murderously competent woman who is fiercely loyal to him … but when it comes to choosing between Santi and the Library she’s served all her life, who will she choose?

Thousands of years ago, the Great Library of Alexandria was the greatest library in the world.
But all things must come to an end, and in our world, war and disaster destroyed the dream.
In Jess's world, the Library survived. Grew richer and more powerful through alliances with other great centers of knowledge. It amassed its own army.
Today, the Library controls the flow of information around the world. .
And Jess Brightwell, son of book smugglers, is soon to discover the dark side of knowledge for himself.
Jess loves books ... but owning books is illegal, and Jess's family are smugglers. The last place he expects to be sent is into the Library, where they want him to be their spy.
In Alexandria, Jess makes fierce, often dangerous friendships within his fellow Postulants--Thomas, Khalila, Glain, even prickly Dario. When new girl Morgan joins and reveals secrets about their instructor, Scholar Wolfe, loyalties will be tested, and grow even deeper.
A great deal of knowledge, Jess discovers, can be a very dangerous thing.
Jess's father heads a criminal empire based on the world's most valuable contraband: original books. In a world where knowledge is owned by the Great Library, his products command fortunes.
Brightwell counts on Jess's twin Brendan as heir to his deadly trade, but Jess ... Jess, he entrusts with the most dangerous task of all: joining the Library.
Only the strong survive, in his world ... and while he loves his boys, he won't save them if they fall.
The most feared of the Library's creations, the automata guard the Library's outpost libraries, the Serapeum. Moving statues powered by gears and magic, they have ferocity and unnatural intelligence.
From the lions guarding St. Paul's in London to the sphinxes guarding the pyramid in Alexandria, the Library has eyes and claws everywhere.
These works of art might look beautiful ... until they move, and you die.
Brendan Brightwell is Jess's identical twin—unfairly called Scraps by his (seconds older) brother. He's brave, clever, and a master manipulator, and while his loyalty can't be questioned, it doesn't come with a guarantee of affection. Brendan prefers logic to love, and has yet to meet someone he can't outwit.
He intends to take his father's place, and if that means using Jess as a resource—and even putting him at grave risk—then so be it. His cold heart can't be warmed by much. At least, not yet ...
Jess's first friend on the journey to Alexandria, and as loyal as they come. You can't ask for a steadier ally in a fight, but despite his strength, Thomas is a brilliant creator at heart.
His engineering skills make him immensely valuable, but Thomas's ideas may be too good, too groundbreaking. There are limits to how much the Library is willing to change ... and his ideas could change everything.
He isn't the first to suggest this innovation ... but the Library intends him to be the last.
The smartest of them all, she is a tenacious young woman who accepts nothing less than the best from herself ... and from those around her. The pressure of being the first woman of her family to pursue this illustrious career makes the pressure to succeed intense.
One day, her name may be spoken of as foremost among the greatest of scholars and leaders of all time ... but only if she can survive the ordeals of the Library.
Surprising, subtle and strong, Khalila is one to watch.
Bright, but driven, Glain has no desire to be liked by her classmates; her focus is on success, and if anyone gets in the way, they'll feel her wrath. Her desire is to become a commander in the Library's army, the High Garda, and she may be the best strategist of all of them ... but she has much to learn about inspiring loyalty.
She's found the right people to teach her ... and in turn, she will teach them to value strength as much as scholarship.
Scholar Christopher Wolfe is a mystery of many parts: a cold, unfeeling tyrant to his class. A brilliant scholar robbed of his legacy. A broken man fiercely loved by his lover and family. A threat to those in power.
Wolfe should be dead, and if he didn't have powerful allies in the shadows, he already would be. Teaching Jess's class is a punishment he doesn't deserve, and a burden he can't endure ... but it might just save his soul, in the end.
Quick with words and blades, Dario is a touchy young man of noble birth, and being thrust into equality with scrubbers like Jess Brightwell doesn't please him. He's willing to do whatever it takes to ensure he survives the Library training ... and along the way, he might have to learn to like, respect, and depend on those he's despised his whole life.
But is Dario to be trusted, in the end? Time will tell ...
One of Dario's hangers-on, Portero is bright enough, but lacks the fire of the top of the class; his days are numbered at the Library, he can feel it. And he can't be sorry ... he's been forced here by his family, and will be grateful to go. Fiercely religious, he feels uncomfortable in this dry, ancient landscape of ancient gods.
But he'll go much farther than he ever expected, and be braver than he ever knew.
Izumi is a cipher: silent and withdrawn, but aware of everything. She has a quiet strength and courage that catches the eye of those around her, but no one really knows what goes on inside. She may be unexceptional for now, but there is a fire inside that won't be denied ... a fire to go far, be better.
She will get the chance, despite all the odds.
Next to Dario's flamboyant arrogance, Guillaume Danton seems weak ... until you get to know him. A survivor of the Library's interdiction of France, and the dispersal of its people, he counts Burners in his lineage—revolutionaries, to his thinking, who seek to stop the Library's oppression. Terrorists, to most who see it from the other side.
Guillaume has secrets, and he's willing to risk his life to keep them. There might be severe consequences not just for him, but for everyone in his class.
Niccolo Santi is a famous High Garda commander, trusted implicitly by the Library with the defense of its' interests ... or he was, until his association with Christopher Wolfe brought even his loyalty into question. But Santi isn't one to run from a fight, and he won't abandon his own, even when the odds are so severely against them.
His strength, ruthless energy, and bravery will preserve a lot of lives in the dark days to come.
These daughter libraries, branches of the Great Library, exist in every city and town. They guard and distribute the collected knowledge of humankind ... but they are also constantly at risk from Burners. Destroying a Serapeum means death ... or worse.
Just ask the once-thriving country of France ... now a frozen memorial, and Library territory. All for the destruction of the Paris Serapeum.
A late addition to Christopher Wolfe's class, Morgan comes with demons and deadly secrets ... secrets that draw Jess closer and closer. She is being hunted, and without a miracle, she'll be found ... and her freedom will come to an end, because Morgan has a talent the Library needs, and needs to keep locked away.
Jess, Wolfe, and the others will have to risk everything to help her try to win her freedom.
One of the masters of the Library, the Artifex Magnus is a dangerous man ... and one with the power to crush Christopher Wolfe and his students at any time. When subtle methods don't work, he can employ more direct means ... and will not hesitate to do so, if threatened.
And the combination of Wolfe, Jess, Thomas, Khalila, Dario and Morgan threaten everything.
The courageous Librarian in charge of the Oxford Serapeum in England, Naomi holds a fearsome responsibility: evacuate her threatened colleagues, save a massive cache of original books, and somehow, survive not just her fellow desperate, starving citizens, but an army poised to destroy the city. She embodies the best of the Library, in Jess's eyes ... a woman who will put it all on the line for her ideals.
Even if it may get her killed.
The Obscurist Magnus, another of the small circle of Library leaders, is shrouded in secrecy and rarely seen ... but that seclusion is an illusion. She can, and does, change the fate of nations with her decisions.
Even the Obscurist has feelings, and her loyalty to family is her weakness ... one the Artifex and the shadowy, all-powerful Archivist seek to exploit. The Obscurist's battle is waged in silence and shadows, but is all the more deadly for it.
The home of the Obscurists, this ancient and well-guarded sanctum is the world to most Obscurists ... they are born there, train there, work there, die there. Over the years, it has become a symbol of the gradual enslavement of the Obscurists to the Library.
And Morgan doesn't intend to be imprisoned there if there's any way she can avoid that fate.
